Simple Gateway

A freestanding camp gateway that marks the unit area and works great for signage.

Intermediate 1-2 hours

Materials Needed

  • 4 long poles (7-8 ft) for side uprights and feet
  • 1 long pole (6-7 ft) for top crossbar
  • 2-4 medium poles for braces and feet
  • Lashing rope or cord

Step-by-Step Instructions

Build Side Frames

Create two matching side frames with sturdy feet so the gateway can stand on its own.

Join with Top Beam

Connect the side frames with a top crossbar using square lashings at both corners.

Add Bracing

Install diagonal bracing on each side to reduce sway and improve stability.

Final Tightening

Check alignment, tighten all lashings, and add signage or decorative rope as desired.

Required Lashing Techniques

Square Lashing

Used to join two poles at a right angle.

Diagonal Lashing

Used to join two poles at any angle, especially when under tension.
